GREY WATER
SYSTEM
Any water that has
been used in the home, except water
from toilets, is called grey water.
Dish, shower, sink, and laundry
water comprise 50-80% of residential
"waste" water. This may be reused
for other purposes, especially
landscape irrigation.
Approximately 61 per cent of the
total wastewater produced by an
average household can be used as
grey water. Kitchen wastewater is
not usually included in this amount.
Lower fresh water use
Less strain on failing septic tank
or treatment plant
Grey water treatment in topsoil is
highly effective
Greywater contains far less
nitrogen than blackwater
Nine-tenths of the
nitrogen contained in combined
wastewater deriveves from toilet
wastes (i.e., from the blackwater).
Nitrogen is one of the most serious
and difficult-to-remove pollutants
affecting our potential drinking
water supply..
